Surf City Nights sizzle with the sound of corn, beef, chicken, and shrimp crackling over fires. Musicians, drummers, and dancers perform their street acts to crowds that throw money in a can or jar if they think the person has talent. This scene comes together once a week on Tuesday nights right across the street from the Pacific Ocean. Huntington Beach's Main Street closes down for this farmers market/street fair that feels like the kind of party where strangers become friends. Go casual, bring pocket change, and get ready to eat, dance, and play.

Prahran’s vibrant shops, bars, cafes, and nightlife are just a paintbrush stroke away from this unique hotel where the motto is to "live fearlessly." From the glass doors in the foyer to the city views of the penthouse suites, the hotel walls present a gallery of original artworks by Australia’s Adam Cullen, the artist and inspiration behind the hotel’s design. At street level, the Hutong Dumpling Bar and the Mediterranean alfresco restaurant The Terrace offer good cuisine to the neighborhood and guests alike. A food-lovers meeting place for trading, dining, and heritage since 1891, this community’s broad range of stalls and specialties on offer mean you could be at risk of walking out of here sporting a new haircut, looking tanned, waxed, refreshed, exercised, healthily fed, a skinny soy decaf latte in one hand with blueprints for a new house in the other, holding the winning lotto ticket, your annual tax return completed, shoes repaired, keys cut, cruises and holidays booked, freshly cut flowers, a new garden plant, home-baked bread, cheese, wine, organic chicken, a fillet of kangaroo… and of course, some fresh fruit and vegetables. But you may need to visit the bank located at shop 812 in the market for all of that. Much better to first visit the Matilda Bay microbrewery for a chorizo, chili pepper and goat cheese tasting plate washed down with a Fat Yak pale ale.

Approaching the southern avenue of Carlton Gardens after stepping off Melbourne’s City Circle tram, it soon becomes apparent why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the world's largest annual horticultural shows every April. Under a canopy of plane tree boughs along the main Grand Allée, the walk towards the fountain designed by Josef Hochgurtel in 1880 offers visitors their first view of the Royal Exhibition Building and its dome. Guided tours to give a better perspective of the architecture and continued conservation work are available on most days; the great ceiling, arches and murals having all been restored back to their original color scheme used in 1901. Hosting state functions, festivals, concerts, and art shows, even being used as a hospital, the only existing Great Hall still in use since the 19th century was built for the people, and is still drawing the crowds.

South of the Yarra River and a free shuttle bus trip away from the tree-lined streets of the CBD, the Royal Botanic Gardens reflect Melbourne’s relaxed urban attitude. Spanning over 36 hectares and home to a diverse range of plants, flowers, and wildlife, it’s one of the city’s top destinations. Navigation around the gardens is made simple with plant and tree varieties grouped into collections: eucalypt lawns and their gum trees; the tropical glasshouse orchids and ferns from around the world, to the giant kauri’s towering above you during the Australian Forest Walk. Whether a city dweller or visitor, the opportunity to bring a picnic, laze next to the ornamental lakes, and replenish your oxygen levels from the surrounding trees, should be enough to keep that relaxed urban attitude topped up.
