The urge to break out your passport can be easily satisfied by hopping a day-trip cruise from Seattle, WA to Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC. In late summer, you can’t toss a Loonie (translation: a Canadian 1 dollar coin) without hitting another tourist, but don’t let that stop you from strolling the kaleidoscopic Butchart Gardens and enjoying afternoon tea. While at the renowned Fairmont Empress Resort Hotel, skip the reservation-required, stuffy dress-coded high tea and venture into the Bengal Lounge. The signature Empress 1908 cocktail is made with tea infused vodka, lemon juice, whipped egg whites, and simple syrup. Served in a sugar-rimmed glass with a tiny raisin scone on the side, one sip will have you saying “pip, pip!"

When you explore Coombs it feels as though you are now Alice and have stepped into your own Wonderland. There are goats that live on the roof above the market that houses the most amazing fresh food. There are giant statues of animals and figures outside the market where you can sit at a picnic table and eat your freshly baked artisan pizza. As you walk around you find buildings with antique furniture and piles of table pieces or clothing. Behind one of those buildings there is a garden that is filled with various statues of Buddha: coming out of flower pots, lining the walls, and a trio that look in conversation. Once you step inside you feel overcome with peace and an appreciation for your surroundings. Coombs has an ethereal, magical quality that truly feels as though you fell down the rabbit hole.
