Who doesn’t love pandas? Visitors to Zoo Atlanta line up every day to see the zoo’s panda family climb on their structures, eat bamboo and, mostly, sleep. The pandas, who are not bears but related to raccoons, escape the hot Georgia summers in air conditioned enclosures, which often are scented with the pandas’ favorite fragrances. Mom Lun Lun likes cinnamon and mint, while Dad Yang Yang prefers Tabasco and lavender. Their two cubs, both born in Atlanta, are the female Mei Lan, born in 2006, and the male Xi Lan, born in 2008. The zoo, in downtown Atlanta’s Grant Park, also is widely known for its work with gorillas.
