The elk know that they are safe here, and human gawking and talking in no way discourage them from coming in close. Part of the herd lounges in the meadow with their legs tucked under their bodies and antlers sticking up from the grass like little groves of trees. The viewing areas are easily accessible, and you can tell from the highway whether its a good day to pause for a close-up look at these large, gorgeous creatures.

The Children's Garden is a miniature sculpture park that is home to a giant blue butterfly, found objects made into figures, and a menagerie of topiaries. A kid-sized, round Hobbit door leads into a secret passage that runs beneath a grass covered mound. From a hidden corner, delighted squeals drift through the air each time the tiny train emerges from its tunnel. All around you, household objects serve as garden ornaments. Be warned—it’s impossible to walk among the clever, whimsical assemblages without feeling the need to ham it up for a few pictures!

Within a few steps over the threshold of the Volunteer Park Conservatory a bright flower or swirling variegated pattern on a leaf will grab your attention. Resistance is futile—just surrender and enjoy. In the palm room, orchid flowers levitate under stems that arc across the building's old, opaque windows. In the cactus room, oddly blue colored specimens tower overhead. Around their ankles short, bristly cousins push fresh blossoms up into the dry air. The bromeliad room makes me feel as though I have passed from terrarium to aquarium. Stiff leaves curl from every surface, intertwining like the tentacles of giant anemones in a deep, bright pool. It is pretty here, and there is plenty of air...but I hold my breath for just a moment.
