Mrs. Popcorn's Garden, Hsipaw, Myanmar (Burma)
Hsipaw, Shan, Myanmar
Inside the drab, unassuming storefront on the corner of Broadway and Fourth Streets near downtown Oakland lies a most pleasant surprise: vegan soul food. While that may sound like an oxymoron to some, Souley Vegan proves that veganism and comfort food need not be mutually exclusive. Here, the classic images of greasy fried chicken and gravy-slathered potatoes are replaced by delectable southern fried tofu and sweet potato fries, best when washed down with a cold beer and followed by a vegan-cream cupcake. The interior is cozy, with bustling communal tables lining the back room and smaller tables occupying a raised platform in the front room. Place your order at the counter when you arrive and then sit back, relax, and enjoy a little flavor of something you never knew could taste so good.
Souley Vegan Oakland, CAIt is the aroma that will draw you in. Each day, Blue Bottle roasts its famous beans in the warehouse behind its storefront on Webster Street, the rich scent attracting local residents and workers in search of a buzz. The earthy, vaguely popcorn smell wafting into the shop only sharpens the customers’ coffee cravings. There are pastries in the small case on the counter and a view into the room next door, hosting a coffee tasting on a Tuesday afternoon. You may opt for a decadent cappuccino, espresso shapes etched into the foam on the top of your cup, or for a freshly brewed (and extremely strong) cup of the bean of the day, each one poured through its own separate filter. If you like, you can even buy a half-pound bag of beans to go. The best part of doing that? You can close your eyes and take a deep whiff of that coffee aroma anytime you want.
Blue Bottle Coffee Oakland, CAA quarter mile in to a run along Redwood Regional Park’s West Ridge Trail, and you’ll forget you’re in Oakland. Another half mile, and you’ll almost forget who you are. Give yourself over to the peacefulness, the towering redwoods, the scurrying of small animals in the underbrush, the bundles of bright blue forget-me-nots clustered along the trail. You may encounter dogs, groups of hikers, and other runners, but the park is large enough that the trails never feel crowded. As you climb the increasingly steep inclines, expect to be rewarded with vistas across untouched fluorescent green hills. After pausing for a short break and to admire the East Bay in all its wild glory, continue climbing. Awaiting you at the very top is the Chabot Space and Science Center, home to a popular planetarium and movie theater. While you may want to come back later, after you’ve cleaned yourself of the mud and sweat of the trail run, you are likely to find that your mind at that moment is spotless.
