Sweetening New York's air since 1895, McNulty's is still the Village's premier tea supplier. Remember visiting a candy store as a kid and being dazzled by the colors, the shapes, the promises of tastebud bliss? Remember wanting to tear open every jar and submit to the ultimate sugar high? McNulty's is that candy shop, but for adults. The teas and coffees come in a staggering array of hues and configurations—and the smell—oh, the smell. It envelops the small shop. It billows out the front door to lure in passersby, carrying fantasies of Java and old Ceylon. Indulge—there's nobody to hold you back now.

In the battle of male-named coffeeshops, Joe seems to be holding its own against nearby Jack's. A steady stream of West Village walkers make their way through Joe's doors every morning, enjoying stout hits of espresso to help them face the day. Joe's award-winning artisan coffee has made hotspots of all its outlets, but the West Village location seems particularly, well, New York. Just minutes from various historic sites—the Stonewall Inn, Julius, Washington Square Park—the cafe is also sandwiched between some of New York's most genteel shopping streets. With a book in one hand and a cortado in the other, settle in and put your feet up on the rail—Joe's front patio is the perfect place to while away a spring morning.

Like another kind of third rail, this cafe will give you a jolt--but a pleasant one. With a black-on-brick style that fits in perfectly with the student vibe of surrounding New York University, Third Rail is a tiny refuge from the bustle of nearby Washington Square. In fact, its sheer proximity to that most active of New York parks makes its laid-back vibe rather remarkable. Only one block away, raucous students rehearse Shakespeare and Beckett, the Pigeon Man's feathery charges flutter for the crowds, and—on sunny days—the rich strains of a grand piano float above the bubbling fountain. But all of that will still be there in an hour or two. For now, how about staying in, calling for one more macchiato and watching the world go by on Sullivan Street?
