The month of June in Ireland is when the country has about 17 hours of daylight per day. The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare is a must-see for every visitor: the beautiful green you see underfoot abruptly ends with a near-vertical drop into the Atlantic. Busses of visitors unload at the entrance to the Cliffs every day. Another way to get around as a tourist is to rent a car. We all know that GPS devices aren’t foolproof, and neither are the back-roads in Counties Clare and neighboring Galway—though foolproof is not always best. Get lost: see and drive the small, dirt, winding back roads. Why, you ask? The local cottages tucked away behind rustic stone fences; the wildflowers growing tall on either side of your car; happening upon a local driver who pulls over to let you go first down the only-one-car-at-a-time road; seeing the green curvy hills in the sunlight, with the clouds above dragging shadows over their emerald forms; and for the possibility that you will find yourself on one of the many roads covered in a canopy of greenery. Simply put, for all the lights and shades of Ireland that make up the unique ambiance of this island.
