In the heart of Old Santa Fe, Garcia Street Books greets visitors with a selection of discount titles on the sidewalk. Inside, its shelves burst with the latest hardcovers and paperbacks in all genres. Stroll the aisles and the reverence for the printed word becomes clear: The loudest sounds you’re apt to hear are the faint buzz of the fluorescent lights and the hushed tones of patrons sharing tidbits about their latest find. The store boasts a large selection of books on the Southwest, art and design, and literature—not surprising for Santa Fe. It also sells the work of local artisans. Customers needing a caffeine fix can head next door to Downtown Subscription, a café and newsstand. It has plenty of outdoor seating where Garcia Street Books’ shoppers can begin to dig into their purchases.

Regulars at Tomasita’s can expect Phil the bartender to have their margaritas made almost before their coats are off. But don’t worry, this Santa Fe favorite at the new Railyard welcomes everyone: Hollywood celebs in town for a movie shoot, tourists seeking a culture fix, and local families. You’ll see them crowding the lobby almost every night, waiting for tables so they can sample the northern New Mexican cuisine, with homemade red or green chile sauce smothering burritos, enchiladas, tamales, and more. For some folks, every day is “Christmas," as they go for a little of both. Meat lovers can try several cuts of steak or the Randy Travis plate—grilled pork chops—and Tomasita’s has plenty of options for vegetarians, too. Be sure to try the sopaipillas, which some locals say are the best in Santa Fe.
