History buffs will be abuzz when exploring Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park, a National Historic Site. Springwood (as the house was named), offers guided tours where you are able to see many of FDR’s personal items such as his library, paintings, prints, bird specimens, model ships and campaign buttons. Visitors are also welcome to see his getaway retreat, Top Cottage, and peruse the many exhibits in The Presidential Library and Museum, built after his death. Afterward, loosen up and check out Hickory BBQ and Smokehouse in Kingston for amazing ribs or the nearby Drive-in movie theater.

It’s evident from the get-go that flying in a 1929 New Standard biplane will be nothing like the cushy commercial flights you’re used to. The seats here are spartan wooden benches, the open-cockpit setup requires you to don a leather helmet and goggles and the only meal service consists of the bugs you’ll be picking from your teeth. But this is considered a first-class seat at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, a 110-acre airfield and aviation museum located three hours north of New York. Any doubts you had will be washed away the second you lift clear of the bumpy grass “runway” and soar to 1,200 feet. With the wind on your face and a crazy quilt of farm fields and forests beneath you, you’ll get why early aviators first risked their lives in these rattletrap flying machines.

In one glimpse, you see both Tarrytown House’s iconic stone castle exterior and its hip veranda and pool. Just 25 miles north of New York City, the resort succeeds exceedingly well in mixing history with modern comfort and luxury. The result is an easy getaway from the city, and a lavish weekend on the banks of the Hudson River. Originally a pair of 19th-century mansions, a stay here now means sipping wine by the fireplace, exploring nearby golf courses and hiking trails, and fine dining in the resort’s Cellar 49 tavern. Most rooms settle for standard corporate comfort, but those in the resort’s King Mansion are each unique, well-appointed with private patios, and in keeping with everything you’d expect from the gaggle of boutique bed and breakfasts dotting Hudson Valley.

Appearing like a fortress wall from the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien, the New Croton Dam rises 297 feet from manicured Croton Gorge Park, where families go about the business of grilling burgers, throwing frisbees and staring in awe at this “in-the-middle-of-nowhere” wonder. Rough-hewn granite blocks, 2,188 feet across, hold back 19 million gallons of water from a reservoir that serves New York City, 22 miles to the south. A massive spillway, incorporating natural boulders and man-made curved and terraced stair-steps, could be a waterfall created by King Hammurabi of Hanging Gardens fame, and is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Whether you’ve never heard of a carabeener or you live to rappel, Seneca Rocks in Mongongahela National Forest offers a way to the top of its 300-foot cliffs for all levels of climbers. Several guiding companies like Seneca Rock Mountain Guides in the area teach amateurs and lead experts up any of the 375 unique major mapped courses. There’s a foothold for everyone: courses start at the most basic 5.0 level and some reach 5.12 status, reserved for the top climbers in the country. For those who’d rather forgo harnesses for hiking boots, a strenuous 1.3-mile hike snakes all the way to the top. Regardless of how you arrive there, the peak of the mountain rewards brave ascenders with breathtaking views of the valley below.

Mianus River State Park is nirvana for dogs, a hotspot for mountain bikers, a magnet for fly fishermen, and one of prettiest "city" parks in Connecticut. Straddling Greenwich and Stamford, CT, the park is so bucolic (oh, how that word is overused, but really applies here), every time I visit, I feel as if I've traveled many hours to Vermont or New Hampshire, but in fact, it is literally in my own backyard. There's a network of well-marked trails both wide and narrow, rocky and flat, that offer hikers access to a woodland river so full of fish, Orvis named a flyfishing fly after it.
