Marilyn lives in the San Geronimo Valley, West Marin, California, a place of rolling hills and redwoods, from which she launches trips to visit indigenous tribes world-wide. As a personal historian, she records and writes life stories. She is author of Marin City Memories, voices of African-Americans who migrated from the Deep South to Sausalito to work in the shipyards during World War II.

With the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge spanning San Francisco Bay on one side and mallards swimming in the lagoon on the other, dusk is a fine time to stroll on the San Francisco Bay Trail in San Rafael's Starkweather Park. Past townhouses on courts named for herons, terns and egrets, the soaring peak of Mt. Tamalpais veers upward against the setting sun. Some benches face the bay, others the mountain, so you can pick your vista when the time comes to pause and take in the Bay's wetlands and migratory birds on the shoreline so close to town.

Scoot right off Paradise Drive onto the trail winding up Ring Mountain’s grassy northern slopes. In spring, rare Tiburon mariposa lillies dot the hillsides like fluttering butterflies. They’re found nowhere else but here near these serpentine outcroppings. Pause up top for a view of the city dazzling in the distance and a full-on 360-degree panorama of the Bay Area’s glistening blue waters and golden hills. A little further on, you’ll come upon Petroglyph Rock, named for its geometric designs carved 5000 to 8000 years ago. Savoring serenity at the top of this ridge, you’ll know why the Coast Miwok called Ring Mountain “the First Place,” the place where the world began.
