Cathedral of Girona, Catalunya, Spain

Sitting on a hill, surrounded by fortifications is the cathedral of Girona (Gerona). This Catalan city has long been of strategic importance and contains traces of much that was good and bad in Spanish history. While impressive from the outside, it is the stunning space inside that takes the breath away. According to the cathedral's guide, the span of the nave at 22 metres is second only to St Peter's in Rome. The cathedral is full of priceless artwork and religious artifacts but as an empty shell it would still inspire wonder. Entry into the Cathedral costs about 10 Euro and includes an audio guide. Sadly it is not permitted to take photographs.
