A fascinating place to visit and learn, Friends of the Elephant Hospital is not just a local institution, it is a national treasure since it is the first elephant hospital in the world. It gives free care to the elephants and runs solely on donations. It has been important to the training of students of veterinary medicine and world veterinarians, especially with amputations due to landmines still in the ground in Thailand and Burma. It has been a repository of learning for the development of prostheses to help elephants walk again. It is a respite and place of healing for the elephants with diseases, infections and intestinal stoppages. Perhaps more important the caregivers are a voice to the plights of elephants, making it an important institution not just to Thailand, but to the world. Here landmine victim Mosha is whispered into a nap by the sing-song voice of founder Soraida Sawala, while Mosha's dedicated caregiver watches over her.

Lighthouse lovers get a two-for-one treat at Cape Henry in Virginia Beach. The old lighthouse was the first federal construction project authorized by President George Washington under the U.S. Constitution. Although it’s no longer used as a beacon, the structure still stands in Fort Story, Virginia Beach, and is open to visitors who want to climb to the top and enjoy the view. Just across the road is the 1881 lighthouse that replaced the first one, allowing you the rare chance to see and photograph a lighthouse from a birds-eye view. From the ground below, it is possible to snap both lighthouses in the same frame.
