La Ideal Sandwich Shop
Tampa, FL
Robinson Crusoe Island
Chile
If what you're looking for is a no-frills, puro y duro Tampa cuban, La Ideal the place to go. Yes, at the Columbia, you may find a more upscale rendition, flaunting meat roasted in a special $30K pork oven. Over at Arco Iris you can get Chinese fried rice on the side. Lincoln entices you with its wall mural paying graphic tribute to pig on a stick in all its glory. And Brocato's faithful are legion. But here at La Ideal, the humble sandwich shop that specializes in this, the most sacred staple to most Tampans, it is just between you and your sandwich mixto... roast pork, ham, a discreet slice of swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard pressed between Cuban bread. Out of respect to the old-timers who frequent the joint, refrain from adding new-fangled bastardizations like tomatoes, lettuce, and mayo. Like a close-knit family, this sandwich is meant to stick together.

Postmodern art critics are fond of positing that a work of art keeps growing and changing—like an organism—long after the artist adds the final touches. This is certainly the case with Patrick Blanc's Vertical Garden. Standing in the shadow of La Caixa Forum—a former electric substation recently converted into a cutting-edge art museum—Blanc's seven-story living sculpture creeps over an adjacent apartment building wall (providing eco-friendly insulation and sound proofing). The patterns and colors change with the seasons as the 250 species and 15,000 total plants bloom and grow and shed their leaves. In arid Madrid, as you step off the car-crazy Paseo del Prado into the courtyard with its tinkling fountains and towering palette of soothing greens, the effect is that of entering a verdant urban canyon. For those who want to keep wandering, albeit horizontally, the venerable Royal Botanical Garden is right across the street.
