The heat of the day has retreated and the sun hangs low as you arrive at the trailhead for Doe Mountain, a mere nine miles outside of Sedona. A well-worn trail snakes gradually up 500 feet of elevation in less than two miles to a flat-topped mesa covered with twisted manzanita and prickly pear cactus. Leisurely explore the crisscrossing network of trails, and stroll around the rim for a complete panoramic view of the nearby red-rock formations. As the sun sets, gaze out at the nearby glowing mountains, while the clear whistles of olive warblers or the stirrings of a whiptail lizard bring the only interruption to the serene silence. Thirty minutes after sunset, there's still ample natural light for your descent, but you brought a flashlight knowing the mesmerizing views might cause you to linger.

You wade out into the warm water and slip into the sea as easily as a mermaid. The salt water supports your body, keeping you floating safely on the surface. You are immediately mesmerized by several turtles grazing on rock algae nearby. They regard you nonchalantly and even paddle closer. You can hear their munching sounds clearly in the shallow water. Schools of brightly patterned, exotic fish swim by. If you look closely, you’ll see shy eels and octopus hiding in crevices of the colorful coral.

Bucking the sea through nine-foot waves, as if we were on a mechanical bull, we ride toward Kilauea to visit Pele, the volcano goddess. We speed past miles of lush rainforest and start to approach much more barren land. The captain asks us to divert our eyes from the billowing sulfur. The toxicity is high that day. Cleared to open them again, we behold strands of liquid fire streaming through the cliffs like veins pumping life from deep within middle earth. She hypnotizes us like a siren, beckoning us to come closer. Most creatures would run from such danger. We inch forward, the water nearly boiling beneath us, sizzling rocks by our bow. We stare transfixed at the molten river while it meets the crashing sea and forms a crust instantly. The glow grows as the day fades and the sky turns crimson mirroring the land. Steam rises high into the heavens signaling the birth of new earth.
