The Newport Mansions
Newport, RI
Just off the Boston Common lies a morbid salute to America’s Independence. Known as the Old Granary Burial Ground, it eagerly awaits visitors prepared to pay their respects to a most notable list of residents dating back as far as the 17th century. Therein, buried beneath the craggy earth rest such legends as Paul Revere, John Hancock, Sam Adams, Crispus Attucks, the family of Benjamin Franklin, and even Boston's mythological Mother Goose. Take care as you creep through the hallowed grounds—in January of 2009 a tourist happened to discover a stairway to a hidden tomb—by breaking through the ground and falling into its entrance!
