Don't forget your blinders when you meander down the side roads of Skagit Valley during the month of April. Headquartered in Mount Vernon, the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival celebrates the region's plethora of tulip growers, drawing thousands of novice (and professional) tulip-watchers. Dormant flowers erupt into full bloom, splattering fuchsia, lavender, and crimson over the gently rolling landscape, the endless rows of tulips looking as if Van Gogh splattered his palette over the damp earth. Whether you choose to peruse the fields on your bicycle, imbibe some syrah at a local winery, or gorge yourself at the annual salmon barbecue, events suitable for all abound. Be ready to be bedazzled.

Large commuter ferries in Washington State are hulking things of beauty. They can also be painfully crowded on sunny weekends, with hours of waiting in line in your parked car. For a more sublime waterway experience, head to Anacortes, WA, and hop on the Guemes Island Ferry. As you putter across Guemes Channel with about 15 other cars, if the boat is full, take note of the whale-like San Juan Islands, breaching all around. You can feel the ferry at the mercy of the water’s dominion—sometimes angling far out in the channel just to accommodate the strength of the current. You beat on, Gatsby-like, not much between your feet and the northwestern water below. Drink it in, but do it fast, as the ride covers less than a mile and takes only five minutes. Your weekend getaway will be one of solace and gourmet food, when you head to Anderson’s General Store for food, provisions, and live music.
