Atomic Coffee is Tallahassee’s newest locally owned coffeehouse—let’s hope it stays! Located on Tennessee Street’s infamous “strip," parking can be tricky, especially on weekends when towtrucks are abundant. Atomic Coffee has a lot going for it, like staying open until midnight and offering artisan roasted beans from quality vendors Intelligentsia and Counter Culture. Even house coffees are hand brewed to order, a difference that truly shines at Atomic. There is a fair amount of space available to accommodate patrons, with a few larger tables available for large groups—however, during peak study times, it can be impossible to sit down and enjoy your brew. The menu offers standard counter-service coffee, with unique drinks crafted from basic espresso beverages and an expansive selection of flavored syrups. Light meals are offered and local vendors supply the café with baked goods and a rotating selection of available goodies. Free wifi with a strong signal is yet another Atomic amenity.
Atomic Coffee Tallahassee, FLIt’s 3 a.m.—where can you go to shuffle off cabin fever and get a great cup of coffee? All Saints Café! All Saints is a favorite for students and offers free wifi and plenty of seating options to accommodate single patrons or large groups. There is also a covered back deck area—ideal in inclement weather—for smokers or patrons who prefer sitting outdoors. Decorated with local art and vintage vinyl, the ambiance is like its location, hip and arty. Menu standouts include chai that’s not premade and “dirty chai,” with a shot of espresso to keep you going.
All Saints Cafe Tallahassee, FLMaude's Classic Café, located in Gainesville's downtown in the shadow of the Hippodrome, is an ideal place to people watch or study. Maude’s took its name after its next-door-neighbor, Harold’s Frames & Gallery—the reference to the cult film was too irresistible to pass up. It’s that same mindset that permeates the entirety of Maude’s, whose menu features light bites with clever, pop-culture influenced names and homemade baked goods. Downtown Gainesville has free wifi, Maude’s shelves are stocked with board games and the coffee is strong, but not bitter. Expect a standard counter-service coffee menu (though in deferring to the “Starbucks phenomenon,” if you want an authentic latte, tell your barista—chain-store coffee has trained many palates not to expect foam). Maude’s tea selection is fairly comprehensive, for those preferring "the gentleman's coffee." Did I mention that Maude's is located directly across the street from a Starbucks? What better way to stick it to the man than to drink local coffee?

“Meet thy neighbors” is the philosophy of Black Dog Cafe, located in the cottages of Lake Ella. Open for over a decade, Black Dog (named for owner Carla Reid’s beloved pet) has become a Tallahassee mainstay for students, artists, and writers. The coffee shop is adjacent to the Tallahassee Legion Hall and features open mic nights, special events, outdoor patio seating, and free wifi (though not on weekends, when the owner encourages patrons to unplug and get to know their neighbors). Black Dog baristas are some of Tallahassee’s finest purveyors of espresso and artists of their trade. Trust that your Americano will never be bitter, there will always be a fine selection of loose teas and specialty green blooming teas, or if you’re in the mood for experimenting—let your barista craft something unique and delicious, like a white-chocolate and lavender mocha. Their signature drinks are the inimitable Black or White Dog frozen coffee confection—topped off with handmade whipped cream. Photo: Black Dog Cafe
