If you want to find me, try the library, farmer’s market, coffee shop, or local bar. Still looking? Wander onto a trail or head to the beach, the airport, or maybe the train station instead. I’ll be the one sky-watching, book-reading, journal-writing, or road-running, all the while searching for home, all the while marveling at this wide, wild world of ours.

An average winter in Alyeska, a resort hugging the Chugach Mountains in southern Alaska, brings approximately 650” of snow to 1,500 acres of skiable terrain. That’s more than 54 feet of fresh powder, waiting to be snowboarded upon, skied over, and tumbled down, depending on your level of proficiency. The 76 named trails provide a playground for both beginners and experts, along with lessons, special programs, and options such as Heli Skiing for the truly adventurous. Tired of going downhill? Rent a pair of snowshoes, opt for some pampering at the hotel spa, or take a tram ride up the mountain for a spectacular view of Turnagain Arm. And when a day on the trails proves especially challenging, head straight to the après-ski activities of the Sitzmark, where the crowd and beer will surely grant you the courage to pull your waterproof mittens on once more. The snow, after all, is falling.

In a town known for coffee shops, it’s impossible to walk far in Seattle before stumbling practically face-first into a cappuccino. Unfortunately, it’s therefore quite possible to wind up with subpar foam on your face. Luckily, though, there’s Espresso Vivace, a Capitol Hill favorite that has, since 1988, done its fair share to elevate the city’s roasting profile. The White Velvet, made with Belgian white chocolate, and the Café Nico, with its subtle orange and cinnamon accents, are of particular pride to locals, just as the intricate latte art is the clear trademark of the baristas themselves. Even the location has wide appeal: at the Espresso Vivace Bar at Brix, there’s a room in the back for those who crave silence, and a bustling atmosphere up front for the chattier customers. When you’re finished with your caffeine of choice, don’t fret: just a couple of blocks away, you can stumble again, right into the shop’s younger sibling, the Espresso Vivace Sidewalk Bar. Might as well leave the foam on your face.

Like the younger sibling of a high school valedictorian, Artifact – the coffee-shop spinoff of the Woodberry Kitchen, one of Baltimore’s most celebrated restaurants – walked into homeroom with a list of expectations to meet. After all, the similarities – an emphasis on local ingredients, creative recipes, and reclaimed decorative elements – hinted at the same commitment to excellence. Happily, the junior in this case more than holds his own. Counter Culture coffee, vintage dresses as uniforms, Wi-Fi, and original drink creations (Basil Creamy or Checkered Cherry, anyone?) create an old-world modernity that complements a satisfying list of breakfast and lunch options. The result is an addition that any family would be proud to claim.
