Museum-Going in the SOMA District of San Francisco
Two of San Francisco's three most prestigious contemporary art museums are located right across the street from one another just a block south of Market Street: the more mainstream SF MOMA, and the edgy Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Each museum has a theater which hosts upstart filmmakers, musicians, and performers, both emerging and established. SF MOMA's exhibitions tends to feature global marquee artists like Chuck Close, Gerhard Richter, and Matthew Barney, while YBCA's programming focuses on fringe cultures and up-and-comers like Miranda July -- and its urban gardens are primo city picnicking grounds.
