Messin' With Wenches in Historic Kent, England
You have to tip your proverbial cap to those who help recreate the fantasies of times gone by, and being served a lively and well lubricated fine lunch or dinner by bawdy wenches surely runs pretty close to the top of most people’s ‘things Henry VIII did that I wished I’d done’ lists. Getting down to the facts, there is no evidence that saucy old Henry enjoyed the fun in this 14th Century establishment, but Queen Anne certainly did and has a room named in her honour. Ye Olde Yew Tree Inn is one of Kent’s oldest pubs, with a delightful open fire and authentic atmosphere and can be found in the addictively charming village of Westbere, which boasts a past as long as Mickey Rooney’s divorce settlements. Also, though we all know and love Canterbury, you can outbid your friends in the holiday stakes with the self-satisfied: “Ah, but did you go to Westbere?”
