Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese — Tim Chester Like

Ducking into Dickens' Old Watering Hole on Fleet Street in London

Carved from the cellars of a 13th-century monastery after the Great Fire Of London, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese has been serving ale for nearly four hundred years. A veritable warren of alcoves, fireplaces, dining rooms and dead-ends, it’s one of the Samuel Smith chain, a relatively independent brewer famed for their bitters, ciders, and Alpine lager. Hey, if it was good enough for Dickens, as well as Tennyson, Twain, and Arthur Conan Doyle, it’s good enough for us.

If you could take just one photo: Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Should your holiday favor extended sojourns “researching” London’s most convivial pubs over landmark museum visits, why not get a bit of hearty pour and historic past at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. One of Fleet Street’s cheapest pints, the delightfully dank (as only a London pub can be) 13th century monastery was repurposed after the Great Fire in 1666 as a watering hole, which became a favorite haunt of Dr. Samuel Johnson, William Thackeray, and Charles Dickens, to name a few. The City’s legal and finance professionals continue to congregate after work for the unique brews and traditional bites, while only the luckiest of tourists stumble into the rather clandestine entrance down the narrow alleyway of Wine Office Court.
