Howling With Wolves in Lucerne, California
On the fringes of a barren valley, largely unfit for and unkind to human beings, it’s alarming to discover majestic beasts built for blizzards and bear-fights. The Wolf Mountain Sanctuary rescues unwanted wolves from silver screen over-breeders and Sarah Palin-esque anti-conservation states. When you’re ready to get your howl on, enter the caged domain of the more domesticated wolves. Wedge your hand between the stiff, outer weather-tested coat, and stuff your fingers deep enough to let the divine interior fuzz graze through your fingertips like cotton candy. Avoid getting too close to their tire-sized heads—it’s impossible to say with certainty whether some of these wild super-sized, powerful puppies would chomp you up if given the chance. For now though, as the wolves stop mid-trot, join them in a closed-eyed, pitch-perfect harmonious howl.
