Breathing in the Mountain Heather in County Wicklow, Ireland

Narrow muddy roads wind through dark forests alive with trickling streams and impressive cascading waterfalls at Wicklow Mountains National Park, mere miles from Dublin's southern suburbs. Placid lakes reflect lush gardens, desolate moorland and soft rolling mountaintops. The purple silhouette cast by the intermingling of wild heather and granite turns to a dreamy indigo as you cross the Wicklow Gap—one of two idyllic passes through this ambling mountain playground—on your way to the ancient monastic city of Glendelough, one of Ireland's most charming, beautifully preserved historic sites.

The glories of Wicklow

Glenmacnass Waterfall, in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains, is one of the major sights on the Military Road. This is a road that was built by the British Army in the early 1800s in order to flush out Irish rebels hiding in the mountains. It lies north to south, beginning just outside Dublin’s suburbs and runs for about 40 miles, finishing in the village of Aghavannagh. Prior to the building of the Military Road, all other mountain roads lay east to west, making it ideal for hiding, particulalry for rebels who knew the countryside very well. The road is probably one of the most beautiful in Ireland, meandering through the valleys and hills, past bogland and mountain passes.
