Discovering a (Dead) Endangered White Deer in Garner, NC
White Deer Park was named for the albino animal frequently spotted around Lake Benson. Residents decided to build the park to honor the woodland critter, but just a few days after the decision, it was hit by a car and killed. Mounted, the deer was housed at the local high school, Lake Benson Park, and several other not-so-secure locations where it suffered from repeated (and somewhat inexplicable) attempts at vandalism. White Deer is finally ensconced in the nature center in its namesake park. Go to see the kitschy local oddity, but stay for the walking trails, picnic shelters, and two unique playgrounds featuring a live action Candy Land trail and kinetic merry-go-rounds.
