Descrying Dante in a Heaven and Hell Garden in Phayao, Thailand
The sculpture garden has all the kitsch of a putt-putt golf course. But take a closer look at the screaming scenes of judgment, decaying despair, and boiling hellpots of humanity, and you'll see that the eternity exhibit next to the beautiful lakeside Wat Si Khom Kham in Northern Thailand’s Phayao isn’t playing around. The temple also happens to feature the north’s largest Buddha image, and its prime location along the national park-enshrouded Kwan Phayao Lake stops the tourist buses. But its depictions of what heaven (there’s a happier section as well) and hell might look like are what make this temple—one of a thousand any traveler to Thailand sees—stick with you.
