Driving Into Waimea's Red Canyon in Hawaii

The drive to the top of Waimea Canyon delivers an unexpected vista around every bend in the road. From expansive views of the Pacific Ocean to valley villages and running streams that form pools at the base of the sea-diving cliffs. Perhaps the most unexpected sight is a small but fast-flowing waterfall that rushes over smooth mounds of red desert-like earth. Despite the fact the Kauai is renowned for its red canyon—even creating a cottage industry based on trademarked red-dirt t-shirts dyed with the actual soil of Kauai—this scene seemed surreal and unnatural in such lush green surroundings. The one thing I could not photograph was the silent awe of the visitors who gathered at the topmost lookout. You could almost hear them breathing the sunset.
