Looking Over Mark Twain's Shoulder in Virginia City, Nevada
Long before Mark Twain became famous for telling us the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, his alter ego, Samuel Clemens, was a newspaper reporter for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, Nevada. Like many, Clemens went West for gold, silver, and adventure, but what he found was a talent for writing unparalleled in American letters. His old desk, books, and a later portrait still reside in the basement of the Enterprise building, although the newspaper is no longer a regular publication.
