Watching Artists at Work in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia
If you're visiting Washington, DC, be sure to take a day and check out Old Town Alexandria. It's only a few minutes south, across the Potomac River, and it's a beautiful collection of historic buildings with shopping and restaurants galore. One of the most interesting landmarks is the Torpedo Factory Art Center, where you can watch dozens of artists hard at work in their studios and tour the building's six galleries. The place actually was built in 1918 as the Naval Torpedo Station, and thousands of the watery missiles were manufactured there. Now, of course, with so many unique paintings, photographs, pieces of pottery, and jewelry to buy direct from the artists and literally "hot off the easel", the only thing at risk of being sunk is your wallet.
