The Hall of Memory is located at the base of the column,there is a glass book case containing the "Golden Book of Remembrance",inscribed with the names of 3500 Torontonians who died during WWII. Two flags flank the display case Canadian flag and the Union Jack flag, because Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth. White plaques on the wall bear the insignia of Canadian Armed Forces units that have been headquarters in Toronto since 1793.

The work is a symbolic interpretation of a great city, but not any city.Created from 100,000 nails,the mural is made up of 9 panels.The circle of massed copper nails in the centre represents the heart of the city The artist is David Partridge. Originally from Akron,Ohio, This mural, called Metropolis, was the winning entry I an art competition held in 1974 to select a permanent work of art to complement City Hall's unique architectural style.
