Trying Not to Step on Toads at Todd Lake (near Bend), Oregon
It may not be as well known as Sparks Lake, its sister to the west, but Todd Lake has its own charms. Hoof the easy half-mile from the parking lot to dip your toes into Todd Lake's glacier-fed waters, or pack a lunch and hike around the lake. It's there—where the trail opens up into wildflower meadows—that Todd Lake works its magic on kids and grown-ups alike. Plan for a slow pace, thanks to the frogs and toads underfoot (and what kid can resist trying to catch a few?), but make sure you don't take them out of their natural habitat. If amphibians aren't your style, look up. Dragonflies and butterflies are everywhere. Have a seat at the water's edge and watch the tadpoles wriggle by as your own little polliwogs while away a late-summer day.
