Crossing the Tizi n' Tichka Pass in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The Tizi n’ Tichka Pass was built as a military highway, and climbs up from Marrakech towards snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains before descending towards Ouarzazate, the Oasis routes, and the desert beyond. Along the roadside hawkers offer their wares to passing travellers, and in the mountain villages kids emerge from red-clay houses to inspect the bikes and their riders with curiosity. Lorry drivers hurl their rusting vehicles around corners as if they know no brakes and the smell of open fires and grilling meat wafts in through the helmet visor at each small settlement. The journey across the Tizi n’ Tichka showcases a very different Morocco than the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, a landscape of peaceful, rugged beauty. Just watch out for the livestock waiting to surprise you in the middle of the road around every sharp corner.
