Designed to reinvent the heritage of 13th-century Thailand with a clean, contemporary sheen, The Sukhothai's succeeds in combining classic Thai architecture with decorous modern design. A favorite haunt of playboys and politicos alike, this stunning city-center boutique hotel designers have shown admirable restraint. Externally this design simplicity has been taken to extremes — the facade is perhaps a little too austere — but it comes into its own with the interiors, which are all muted tones and clean lines. The food in the Celadon restaurant is worth crossing continents for, and lounging by the pool — with a platoon of khaki-clad professionals scurrying after your every need — is a very special experience.
