Finding the Point of The Spire in Dublin, Ireland
Dubliners take great pride in assigning not-so-affectionate nicknames to the city’s landmarks. The Spire, a recent addition to O’Connell Street, has not escaped this fate, and “The Stiletto in The Ghetto” continues to split opinion. Shooting upwards from the northside’s main thoroughfare, “The Spike” rears over Dublin’s low-rise buildings. In terms of visibility there’s no better meeting point, but debates rage on its aesthetic and symbolic merits. By night the tip is illuminated, creating a strangely disembodied beam that hangs menacingly over the fair city, but questions remain. Is The Spire a striking, modern addition to Dublin’s skyline, or is this giant needle, at least figuratively speaking, pointless?
