Braving the Elements in the Outback, Australia
After two months on the road, our road trip in Australia would end with a climactic seven-day excursion through the Outback. With our survival kit, we drove. Then we drove some more. The towns became sparse, and we knew we were past civilization when we rode through a town claiming a collection of two rundown outhouses as its town center. For hours, it was nothing but red barren desert and kangaroos. The air conditioner couldn’t cool the heat, and the open windows drifted in the lingering smell of dirt. Our emergency stash of chocolate melted to the floor, and the radio only played static. Sweaty hair and clothes clung to our greasy skin. The sunset brought the most amazing colors. We glanced at our gas tank warily. If ever there were life on Mars, surely this would be it.
