Taking in Dazzling Designs at the Islamic Center in Washington, DC
As you're passing each country's contribution to the landscape on Embassy Row, you may be surprised to see what looks like a minaret rising up on the horizon. This building, which appears to have been airlifted from the Middle East, is the Islamic Center. It features a crenelated courtyard complete with Arabic script and an mosque inside. Once you've taken off your shoes you step onto the soft carpets where you'll be transported by the dazzling designs that await inside. Light streams in through the patterned windows as you gaze upwards to the geometric patterns of the ceiling. The mosque features wood carvings, painted tiles, and stone work from all over the Islamic world. You can't help but be arrested by the enchanting designs that surround you here.
