Feeling Hell Freeze Over While Looking at Bosch in Madrid
The cities burn; battles rage as corpses lie piled en masse. Demons usher their captives to punishment without pity through a desolate terrain of torture (and strangely enough nude ice skating). Bosch's hellscape, the gruesome final panel of this triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights is the stuff of nightmares. This dark masterpiece, painted around the beginning of the 1500s, features some of the most disturbing scenes ever put to canvas. Though musicians and gamblers seem to bear the brunt of the demonic wrath, any visitor to the Prado who takes in Bosch's powerful vision of hell will feel their pain.
