Finding Trolls in the Fremont Neighborhood in Seattle, Washington
Dubbed by residents as “The Center of the Universe”, the funky Fremont neighborhood of Seattle has a reputation for being a little eccentric. Faced with a boring, empty underpass below the Aurora Bridge, the city’s Arts Council asked local artists to submit ideas for a sculpture to fill the space. Four creative citizens rose to the challenge and came up with a steel, wire and concrete design in the shape of a troll, a nod to the area’s Scandinavian roots. Crawling out from the shadows underneath the bridge, leering at passerby with one hubcap eye and clutching a real Volkswagen Beetle, the Fremont Troll could be interpreted as slightly hostile. But according to local tales, this misunderstood monster is a friendly one who has been embraced as the unofficial town mascot.
