Pub Crawling Historic Watering Holes in Boston, Massachusetts

The renowned revolutionary city of Boston has its fair share of historical sites and attractions. Just stroll along the Freedom Trail to observe period piece historians weaving their tales of bygone times through the cobblestone streets. Now mix this enthusiasm for the past with a steady drink in your hand to really get excited about history. Sign up for a short pub crawl with the Freedom Trail Foundation to sample specially brewed ales, tasty pub fare, and enlightening anecdotes in Boston’s most enduring watering holes. Stops include the oldest tavern and restaurants in America, with all establishments located in one square block of each other. And in the end, a few solid beers and your guide’s exquisite taste in costumery will let you appreciate American history that much more.

Life amongst the lifeless

Imagine being a tourist, (from the agricultural world of Delaware), traveling the busy streets of Boston. The architecture of the city will forever be in my brain, including the damp and neutrality on a cloudy day. Keep walking down a busy street of grays and blacks; Among the people who are too busy with their own lives, and avoiding the rain, you see green. Two beautiful green rows of trees; Life amongst the lifeless! Not only do the beautiful trees add life to the dead building, but they brightened the fogginess of a regular Boston day. Even the small things are astounding.

If you could take just one photo: The Freedom Trail

Even those who cringe at the thought of a history lesson can't help but be enchanted by wandering on a red pathway past new architecture set behind the oldest churches on the Boston Freedom Trail. One will be admiring the view of the commons when suddenly Mother Goose's grave appears on the left. Look to long and you will miss Paul Revere's house and the beautiful sunset over Boston Harbor. The Freedom trail takes visitors on a meandering timeline, showing what has come to Boston in the past decade while also reminding us the raw spirit that Boston was built upon. The Puritan work effort that erected the commons and dusky graveyards. The patriotic mindset that raised the lamp in the looming tower of the old north church and fired that deafening first shot. The proud Italians who braved the epic journey across the sea whose neighborhood seems to have been chipped straight off of Rome and sent over with them. This is a can’t miss in Boston, plus it is free, easy to find, and appropriate for all ages.

If you could take just one photo: The Freedom Trail

Let’s be honest, learning about John Hancock from a history textbook doesn’t compare to hearing about him at his actual grave site. Boston’s Freedom Trail offers an exciting, firsthand experience of the birth of America. This 2.5 mile path is painted red and includes 16 historic landmarks to discover along the way. Stop by the Granary Burial Ground to the see the grave site of Mother Goose. Pose for a picture next to the Benjamin Franklin statue outside the first public school, and step aboard the USS Constitution. Finally, conquer the massive 221-foot Bunker Hill Monument and take a picture from one of the tiny windows at the very top; the view is breathtaking. Grab an ice cream from a local vendor and admire the towering monument while you lounge in the afternoon sun on one of the nearby benches. You’ll be glad you did.
