The Esplanade

This delicate strand of parkland separating Back Bay from the Charles River is one of the few outdoor areas of Boston that plays host to visitors year-round. Near the eastern edge of the Esplanade lies the Hatch Shell, site of Boston’s best outdoor concerts each summer. In the winter, paths are plowed allowing runners to enjoy views across the river to Cambridge. Spend some time here savoring a picnic, tossing a frisbee, or just gawking at the hard-bodies running between the various community workout areas.

Some of the city’s most active residents inhabit Boston’s waterfront boulevard, and they don’t sport feathers. Whatever the season, energized city goers flock to the Esplanade alongside Storrow Drive to breathe in fresh gusts off the Charles and enjoy a surplus of striking urban views. Sunny summer days entice picnickers to relax while sailboats play in the chop. Crisp fall afternoons enclose runners in a wonderland of glimmering golds and fiery reds. Even in winter, when signs of life seem sparse, a few bundled faces can be seen walking dogs along the pristine ice-lined shore, until the exploding colors of springtime buds entice families to bustle again by the river’s edge. Hop over any of the easily accessible pedestrian bridges to reach this refuge of natural energy.
