Surveying the Urban Landscape From the El in Chicago, Illinois
For a cheap and adventurous way to get an overview of the city, cruise around on Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains. The train system, which is nicknamed "The El" because about 90% of the tracks are elevated, has eight lines that branch out from the loop downtown into most of the city's 77 designated community areas. From the vantage point of a train car window, you'll gaze out at art deco skyscrapers, massive condos, dilapidated factories, and homey backyards as your fellow riders introduce you to the incredible ethnic and cultural diversity of Chicago's people.
