Cruising the Causeway From Gulf to Bay in Tampa, Florida
Surrounded by sparkling blue water, a palm-lined stretch of highway flows across Tampa Bay, connecting Clearwater (on the Gulf of Mexico) with Tampa, Florida. Running at sea level, with two elevated areas for watercraft, the Courtney Campbell Causeway scenically combines the need for human R & R with the necessity for marine and wildlife habitats. This nine-mile stretch offers beaches, a public boat ramp, jet-ski access, nature preserves, and paved areas for hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, and fishing. The Tampa Bay estuary is a designated marine habitat sanctuary and the Great Florida Birding Trail provides bird watching and environmental activities. Mangroves provide vegetation for small fish and animals. At any given time, dolphins, sea turtles, or manatees may be seen playing in the bay.
