Dicovering Perky's Bat Tower in Sugarloaf Key, Florida
After enjoying a drink under the thatched roof of the poolside bar in Sugarloaf Key just north of Key West, we went for a sunset walk and discovered the Bat Tower. What was it? Why was it there and how had it survived in the land of hurricanes? A quick investigation revealed it was built many years ago for bats, hoping they would nest there and eat the mosquitoes in the area. The imported bats flew away and never returned, leaving behind the Bat Tower for adventurous tourists to explore and photograph for generations.
