Finding Peace in a Sustainable Village in Kathmandu, Nepal
Just seven kilometers southwest of Kathmandu, in the foothills of Chandragiri Parbat, the view of the city against a snow-capped Himalayan backdrop—even Everest is often visible—is eye-popping. Here in 1993, on his ancestral land in the village of Thankot, Chandra Manu Bhusal (aka Ram Chandra Das) founded Sri Aurobindo Yoga Mandir Trust, the philanthropic organization behind a self-sustaining community that’s member managed according to the spiritual teachings of Swami Aurobindo. A simple rural guesthouse is open to visitors (for a nominal fee) interested in discovering the welcoming ashram’s organic farm, dairy, tailoring/embroidery center and school for 100 poor resident children; in volunteering in the gardens; or simply in seeking a peaceful place to practice yoga and meditate.
