It may or may not have the premier wave, but Huntington does have a legendary surf culture, and it’s evidenced by more than crowded waves – the beach town is home to the International Surfing Museum, the Surfing Walk of Fame, and the Surfing Hall of Fame. Millions of photos have been taken at Huntington Beach. It's a perfect backdrop for photography. You can go there every single day and it will appear completely different. Whether it's who happens to be there, or how the waves are rolling in. My favorite time to go is around a half an hour before the beautiful sun finally sets, as the day begins to calm down and slowly turn into night. I know when it's slightly cloudy, the sunset will be extra special. On this day, I was with my son, and we were messing around taking pictures. This one almost seems surreal, like a UFO type effect. We left there feeling rejuvenated. We usually do!
Walking underneath the Huntington Beach pier is a fun, visual experience. It's almost an optical illusion, like the pier just goes on endlessly. I live close by, so I make going to this beach part of my regular routine. Whether I go to watch surfers trying to win the latest contest, or pick shells along the shoreline, or play with my dog further north at the Dog Beach area, or chomp down on one of Ruby's yummy burgers, or have a mai tai at Sandy's and people watch, or see what the fishermen are catching, or wind down my day watching the mesmerizing sun set, I always leave Huntington Beach feeling great!
If you love to play or watch beach volleyball; don't mind being surrounded by young, athletic, and tanned hotties; and enjoy being where the surf meets the sand, then hurry to the outdoor volleyball courts at the Huntington Beach pier , known by the moniker as "Surf City USA". This stretch of coastline in Orange County beacons all sun worshippers for numerous sports and games. Thirty nets are erected by the city, where beginners and pros can play. Here is where many professional competitions are played, including the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Pro Beach Volleyball Games, plus others sponsored by beer, beachwear and shoe companies. Each of these tournaments draw thousands of gawkers, fans, and sport enthusiasts. Bleacher stands are erected for such games, but one of the best viewpoints is looking down from the pier.
"Awesome! Gnarly! Stoked!" Surfers say that it's more than just a time honored tradition, and more than just a sport. For many, surfing is a religion, a spiritual connection with nature. And the Mecca of surfing in the continental United States is Huntington Beach, California, popularly known as "Surf City USA". In fact, the duo Jan & Dean, who sang the 1963 hit "Surf City", were residents here. With a shoreline 8½ miles long, it's the longest uninterrupted beachfront on the entire West Coast. And this is home to many professional competitions, drawing thousands of spectators and fans to each event. Nearby are many famous surf shops, beachwear shops, resort hotels, fast food joints, gourmet restaurants, and even a surfing museum. The city has one of the largest enrollments in Lifeguard training anywhere. Parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway.
