Riding the Rails of the Sumpter Valley Railroad in Oregon
After a visit to the massive gold dredge at the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area, experience a bit more of Oregon’s gold mining history by riding the rails on a restored, steam-powered locomotive. This vintage train originally hauled millions of dollars of gold ore and timber from the Elkhorn Mountains between 1890-1947. While fellow passengers get their cameras ready to capture the scenery, watch as the crew fills the steam locomotive with water and carefully couples on antique narrow gauge cars and a caboose. The 5-mile trip between the historic mining town of Sumpter and McEwen station is available weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through the end of September.
