Cruising the Snowfields in Carrabasset Valley, Maine

Five hours north of Boston, Sugarloaf is the ideal spring weekend getaway for New England skiers who thought it was time to put their equipment away for the summer. This isolated mountain is home to the only lift serviced above tree line skiing in the east, and though the famed ‘Snowfields’ typically do not open until well into the season, they are well worth the wait. After a short hike to the to the peak of the second tallest mountain in the state the views stretch for miles in all directions, though get too distracted because the terrain is some of the most challenging on the mountain. With March and April being two of the snowiest months in the part of New England, the Snowfields of Sugarloaf are well worth delaying the end of winter for one more weekend.

Sugarloaf

Whoosh. Whoosh. WHOMP. For a beginning snowboarder, perhaps the WHOMP should come first. On the bunny hill at Sugarloaf Mountain, the snow is blinding white and icy cold. On your left and right skiers and snowboarders coast expertly down the hill to their Superquad lifts--you watch them and the far-off mountain peaks from a seated position. As you dust the snow off your back and start to get up, a group of fearless seven-year-old riders passes you by, one asking, "Are they meditating?" Everyone in your group lesson chuckles as the instructor says, "No, not meditating. They're learning." And you are. With every successive attempt, you get a little more whoosh and a little less whomp. By the time the Skidway lift operator knows your name, you're ready to move on. Up.
