Much like New York's Central Park, Vancouver's verdant Stanley Park is a much-needed oasis from the rigors of city life. And it's simply amazing for families with kids -- within the park's 1,000 acres, one can commune with dolphins, take a miniature train ride, cool off in a colorful spray park, tackle the water slide in an oceanfront swimming pool and gaze in awe at the cruise ships setting off for Alaskan waters. Several playgrounds and wide open fields invite picnics and games of catch -- top off the perfect outdoor day with sushi and gelato on nearby Robson Street.

A landscape dominated by majestic mountains and a bustling harbor unfolds as it sneaks under the Lions Gate Bridge and out to sea. Great blue herons and bald eagles nest in the towering cedars here. Canada geese joust with swans for territory in the park’s Lost Lagoon. An icon in the world’s collection of postcard-perfect city parks, Stanley Park is North America’s third-largest park and a National Historic Site. Join the locals to walk, jog, or blade around the stunning sea wall that surrounds the massive Stanley Park. Book a tennis game or play pitch-and-putt. Check out the totems, visit the Vancouver Aquarium or take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Or ramble down its leafy lanes, enjoying the canopy of Vancouver’s old-growth city forest.
