Orbiting the Art in Springville, Utah
There is plenty to explore in the exhibits at the Springville Museum of Art, but it's the curious fountain in the sunlight-filled atrium that stops you in your tracks, if not to admire, at least to examine the engineering. Moon Pool is a Rube Goldberg-esque way of moving water—a track of pipes, troughs, and pointless propellers. Your eyes and ears are first drawn to a water wheel, but quickly go to the large basin of water. Plenty of wishes have been deposited here, and half of its pennies are now a magnificent blue. The artist accentuated the tub's twirling whirlpool effect by placing a metal ball right in the center, which spins in place and seems to pull on another ball that rotates around it like a planet in orbit. In this atrium, astronomy becomes art.
