Getting Soaked for the New Year in Thailand
Thailand celebrates the arrival of the new year in mid-April with a festival called Songkran. In essence, it’s a nation-wide water fight. Thais of all ages cram into the backs of pick-up trucks lugging huge barrels of water—ready to douse any and all they encounter—rincluding the traffic cops desperately trying to direct crazed drivers. Water guns, balloons, hoses, and buckets are all fair game in this unique tradition that evolved from a once-benign practice meant to convey respect. Luckily, April is Thailand hottest month of the year.
