Finding Beauty in the Bathroom in Northampton, Massachusetts

While there is no surprise in finding great art at Smith College’s Museum of Art, few visitors would think to check the restrooms at the very bottom of the museum, which have been transformed in to functional art installations by artists Ellen Driscoll and Sandy Skoglund. The women’s room by Driscoll, titled Catching the Drift, is made up of delicate, curving white and blue lines and images all reminiscent of the ocean. Skoglund’s men’s room, Liquid Origins, Fluid Dreams; consists of walls lined with small, hand-painted black and white tiles, each depicting a mythological image. While each work creates an individual atmosphere and structure, both rooms are a beautiful and innovative way to bring art out of the usual galleries.
